PhD position on functional dyes at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Jena, Germany)


We invite highly motivated and creative applicants for a PhD Position at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The project will run in the group of Prof. Dr. Kalina Peneva. Research activities will span in the field of organic chemistry, synthesis of chromophores, their photophysical characterization and application. The work will be at the interface of chemical synthesis, biomedical applications of molecular sensors and fluorescence imaging/nanoscopy.


Key responsibility include:

  • Synthesis and characterisation of organic chromophores
  • Application of the prepared chromophores in biological systems together with biologist and physicists.
  • Vivid interaction with other chemists, physicists, and biologists
  • Communication and teamwork in an international research environment.



  • Master’s degree in Chemistry (alternatively related fields e.g. Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Chemistry, Materials Science,…)
  • Fundamental laboratory experience and knowledge in organic chemistry.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Ability to integrate in a team, work independently and have good organizational as well as communication skills.
  • Scientific curiosity with an open attitude to work interdisciplinary in the framework of international collaborations.


Experience of organic synthesis and in international research environment would be an advantage.
